Exercise Physiology
Long term management for chronic conditions, injuries, and pain
... movement is medicine ...
An Accredited Exercise Physiologist (EP) is a university-qualified allied health professional who specialises in using exercise to manage chronic health conditions, injuries, pain and physical limitations.
While Physiotherapists and Exercise Physiologists share many skills, their different areas of expertise complement each other.
What's the difference?
Physiotherapists assess, diagnose and treat injuries, pain and movement dysfunction. They help identify the underlying cause of a problem, manage symptoms and develop treatment plans to support recovery.
Exercise Physiologists specialise in exercise-based rehabilitation and long-term management of health conditions. They develop individualised programs to improve strength, mobility, endurance, function and confidence in movement.
Why choose an EP for a chronic condition?
For chronic pain, recurring injuries, arthritis and long-term physical limitations, an EP can be an excellent choice for ongoing exercise management. Physiotherapists can also prescribe rehabilitation exercises, but EPs have specialised training in delivering, monitoring and progressing structured exercise programs over time.
- Long-term management: Build strength, improve function and manage symptoms over time.
- Individualised programs: Exercise tailored to your condition, abilities and goals.
- Regular progression: Adjust exercises as strength and confidence improve.
- Confidence and independence: Learn how to exercise safely in everyday life.
- Reducing recurrence: Address physical limitations and build capacity for daily activities.
How we work together at Melton Physiotherapy
Your Physiotherapist will generally complete the initial assessment, establish a diagnosis and develop a treatment plan. Once appropriate for ongoing exercise-based rehabilitation, your Exercise Physiologist can lead and progress your exercise program. Generally, every 6–8 weeks, your EP will refer you back to your Physiotherapist for reassessment. This helps the team:
- Review symptoms and overall progress.
- Reassess strength, mobility and physical function.
- Identify changes in your condition and update rehabilitation goals.
- Communicate recommendations so your EP can adjust your program.
If new symptoms or concerns arise, your EP may recommend a Physiotherapy review sooner.
The best of both worlds
Your Physiotherapist helps assess and guide your recovery.
Your Exercise Physiologist helps build the strength, confidence and physical capacity to maintain your progress long term.
At Melton Physiotherapy, our goal is not just to help you feel better temporarily. It is to help you move better, become stronger and confidently manage your health for the long term.
